So, every year, I let my phone play and check it at midnight to see what the anthemn of the new year will be.

I have a feeling this is gonna be a rough one, brace yourselves.

"Let Us Burn - Within Temptation"

(Also, my resolutions, which I'm putting here to help hold me to them:
-Make a dent in the move
-Make a dent in the to-be-read pile
-Be less Shy/silent
-Comment more
-Be more active
-Work towards finally getting that Driver's Lisence
-Keep writing, make progress on those novels/prioritize the original work

I said earlier this year I would post here more often...guess I just don't often have that much to say.

Anyway, I wanted to post the list of books I read this past year here. My two resolutions were to make a dent in the move and the to-be-read pile, and thought it doesn't look like I did, the fact that there's 101 books on this list says I did. I have brief commentary on it about each one, I always forget I'll post it somewhere so they're pretty frank.

See the list )

I HAVE FINISHED THE FIRST DRAFT OF MY MERLIN NOVEL!

snufkin and little my dancing on the beach

Yes I know I have to do all the editing now but still! First draft complete! Open Office says it's about 165,950 words - I wrote a brick. :)

Questions welcome while I celebrate!

Going to switch my main daily quota over to the Second Draft of A Witch's Secret for awhile, give my brain a break to come back fresh to Merlin later.

Progress continues on the 2nd draft of A Witch's Secret! I have to re-write this one from scratch, it's so old and was done completely on the fly. I've fixed five plot holes and started work on fixing some things that seemed fine at the time but now need major fixing already. :)

Also, work on the Merlin novels continue. I'm thinking an Arthur/Lancelot/Guinevere polyamourous trio. ;) I never did like love triangles much.

Be ready, I want to try and post more about my original work from now on, hopefully other people will enjoy it as much as I do.

(Also, yes, I am working still on the fanfics, I just have no ideas on how to finish some or where some are going and they get worked on after the original novels.)

Jack finally found Bunny weeding a patch of garden. It seemed Bunny spent a lot of time tending to gardens, weeding and coaxing and feeding and watering.

It looked like a lot of work to Jack, and vague memories of a life before being a spirit told him it was, but not necessarily bad work.

He was still going to stay away from the plants he wasn't sure could take a frost, though. Big difference between doing that on accident to a plant outside to harming something in the Warren. That almost felt like sacrilege.

Jack watched Bunny work for a minute before he swooped down and blew a cold draft over the back of Bunny's neck.

Bunny screeched, fur standing straight up and his ears snapping to attention as he jumped several feet in the air.

Jack was sent spinning through the air by the reaction and he howled with laughter as he tumbled.

“Bloody show pony,” Bunny grumbled, freezing for a second after the words slipped out, as if afraid that it was still too soon for insults, even affectionate ones, but Jack kept laughing.

He swooped down to tap Bunny's nose with a laughing “Boop!” and flitting back up just out of reach. “Hey Bunny,” he added.

“Hey, Jack,” Bunny replied with a sigh and a fond smile. “What was that about, ya loon?”

Jack shrugged. “I dunno. Saw the opportunity and took it, I guess.” He drifted back down to the ground, crouching on a rock near Bunny. “Doin' somethin' important?”

Bunny shrugged. “You're more important. What's up, Snowflake?”

The tricksters and spirits of love and marriage were reluctant to leave. They wanted to stay, to help the Guardians – all of them – work through these first few days.

Still, there was a line between 'helping' and 'meddling', between wanted and unwanted interference, and staying longer would be crossing that line into bad territory.

Each made a point to talk to each Guardian anyway before they left, offering everything from a line of communication if they needed advice or a willing ear to another modified shovel talk. Sometimes both, and sometimes the shovel talk wasn't exactly all that serious.

The Guardians, after all, wouldn't hurt Jack on purpose. On accident, though...they'd probably end up punishing themselves worse than the tricksters could, but that wouldn't stop them from taking advantage of a perfect opportunity to get away with pranking some of the most well known and powerful spirits around with impunity.

The first few days were tentative, as the seven spirits did the emotional equivalent of tiptoeing around each other.

As much as they wanted to stay by each other and try to fix this, they all had duties, and all too soon Tooth and Sandy had to leave. No matter what was happening to them personally, the children were still losing teeth that needed collecting, and they needed sweet dreams, and Tooth's fairies could only go without their mother so long, and Sandy could only leave the Dreamsand on its own so long.

Jack was almost relieved by it, and promised to go visit them both soon, after they'd gotten things back under control. He faltered a little when trying to explain, finally falling back on, “I want some one on one time. This is...getting a little overwhelming.”

The Guardians knew how long Jack had spent alone. Of course they did. But for someone who had lived as long as Bunny or Sandy, or someone who could get caught up in their work to the point of having a week pass by without their notice, like North or Tooth (or, to be fair, also Bunny) it was much more difficult to register just how difficult those three hundred years would have been for someone like Jack, who craved interaction with other people the way a fish craves water.

And, though the Guardians hadn't noticed, spirits had been growing fewer. Oh, people still believed in things, it was true, otherwise the Guardians themselves would have had to notice. But new spirits, oh no. They looked to other explanations, didn't create new spirits unless in fun now.

They might be created – look at Slenderman, or O'SHA – but it wasn't belief like was needed to sustain a spirit. Most of the ones that did appear were brief and weak as belief waxed and waned.

A Weather Phenom like Jack Frost? Even rarer. With radar, and storm tracking, and all the rest...why believe in a spirit causing the weather when everyone knew it was because of shifts in air pressure and warm air versus cold and all the rest? Jack was lucky in being old enough and embedded enough in culture that his name was still spoken, and he was strong on his own, from being raised by the moon and his own inner strength, that direct belief didn't weaken him.

Most all other Weather Phenoms had drifted away into nothing but a voice on the wind, fading away into nothing, as the years passed. New spirits were rarer and rarer, and the older spirits so entrenched in what they did that they didn't have time for a carefree spirit like Jack.

He irritated them at best. At worst, well, Jack was probably lucky he hadn't gotten into more fights than he had.

So, state of the Phenyx now that we're a bit into the new year...

-I'm working on a sort of bullet journal/low-key scrapbook. The kind of thing that would make people who take bullet journalling seriously foam at the mouth, but it's suiting my needs. I'm also back on my diary bullshit, writing that after I do the daily bullet journal.

-Working on an original manuscript...it seems like I never have time to finish one before nano hits, let alone doing the second draft. But...

-I'm working on getting this house livable. I'm the only one working on it, and there's just...a lot of things I can't make calls on, and it's daunting and hard to find any way to make progress.

-Also still writing To Have and To Hold, though it's getting a bit frustrating at the moment figuring out where it's going

-Started some work on the soundtrack for The Starlight Princess. It's getting me back working on it, so there's that. Not easy, but fun. Also keeps making me ask who would ever have made this movie, Alcor's a DEMON, and yet.

-Resolutions are to make a dent in the cleaning and in my 'To-be-read' pile. Last count topped out at a little over 400 books. I...may have a problem.

The anthem for 2018 (chosen by letting my music player play on shuffle and seeing what came up at midnight) was "Strong" by Sonna Rele.

This year, it's "Start Another Story" by Emilie Autumn.

Let's make it happen.
lady_phenyx: Drawn image of woman with red hair, large brown eyes and glasses wearing a white button down and pink vest (Default)
So, 2018's almost over. The theme song for me for 2018 was Sonna Rele's "Strong", I'll find out at midnight what the theme song for 2019 will be.

Been a hell of a year. Feels like it was over in a blink yet lasted for much longer than a year.

Because I can...I was writing down all the books I read over the year, to keep track and motivate myself to get through my ridiculously huge to-read pile, which is blocking my way of putting away my books.

The list, along with a summary of the book's plot and if I liked it or not (written without the intention of posting, so...) behind the cut.

Jack slept like the dead, curled up on top of the blankets.

He was disoriented when he first woke up, reaching blindly for his staff. This wasn't his bed, and it wasn't the snow bed, where...

Baby Tooth chirped sleepily and Jack shook his head, coming fully awake. The Pole, he was back at the Pole. This was his bed. The Guardians came for him, they didn't abandon him. He was free.

He'd watched the Snow Queen turn into a statue of ice, and though she hadn't been shattered, he wouldn't be surprised if someone vengeful found out about what had happened and tried to.

Not his fault. It was her spell. She'd been attacking Rani.

...still, maybe her statue could be moved somewhere safer. The basement of the pole or his ice palace in Antarctica, maybe.

Sitting up, Jack curled up against the headboard, looking around the room as he thought, avoiding thinking about what had just happened by thinking over what he considered to be a bigger problem.

If he could believe Nightlight, than this whole this was a miscommunication, an attempt to wait until he felt more secure to tell him about the marriage. A chance for the other Guardians to get their own act together before bringing him in.

And he wanted to believe that, but ages of hurt didn't go away that easily.

After a few minutes, he sighed and stood up. He was retreading old ground here, even with the added 'they came for me' that kept running through his head, proof to his heart that they cared and balancing the voice in his head that tried to find reasons for it beyond 'they care.'

Jack cracked open the door, not surprised when he saw a yeti outside, working on a small toy prototype.

They perked when they saw Jack, and he gave a little wave. “Hey,” he said awkwardly. The yeti began to babble, and Jack winced. “Um, maybe don't ask me that yet?” he said.

“I...look, I want to talk to Freyr and his crew if they're still willing,” he said when the yeti paused, looking at him with tilted head. “I need to get my head straight. Then I'll talk to the Guardians.”

The yeti spoke again, a long screed in yetish. Jack nodded his way through it, saying, “Yeah, I know, but I still need to talk to them first. Yeah, I could eat. Yeah, you can tell them I'm up, so long as you let them know I'll talk to them later.”

The yeti nodded and patted Jack's head before making their way down the hall, moving surprisingly quickly and quietly for someone of their size.

Jack ducked back into his room to wait, and hoped he could get some good advice for once. That this was the right decision.

We don't know where the cat came from, what her life was like before us - we know she was a stray, that she was scared of everyone, but now she lives in our house, sleeps on my mom at night.

This is her first Christmas with us, and quite possibly her first with a family.

Thank all the stars and little planets we have a fake tree and she doesn't seem interested in it so far. XD

(PS Yes she does have a stocking with new toys and a new brush in it, what kind of pet owner do you take me for?)

(Also the presents to make list is still unfinished even though I started at least one of them back in the springtime. Every year down to the wire.)

Yes, I'm posting this here now, the way I was posting it on Tumblr, with links to the AO3 and FF.net versions.

The story begins HERE ON AO3 and HERE on FF.NET

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The throne room was already half destroyed by the time they got there. Sand, both black and gold, was trapped in spikes of ice that thrust violently around the room, though they still looked different from the one Jack and Pitch had created in the Arctic.

It was the ice, Jack decided after a glance at it. This ice had none of the sparkle that his had, and too much menace. Clear still, but dull still, the harsh ice of a long, unforgiving winter.

He tore his eyes away from the spears of ice to the action. The Snow Queen had taken up position by her throne, and though it looked like she was cornered, Jack had spent too much time with her already to believe that.

The other thing that was still hard to believe was that Pitch was still here, and fighting alongside the rest. It made no sense. The urban myth spirits were gone, though what exactly had happened to them and where they were Jack didn't know, (and wasn't sure he wanted to know) and the Guardians and Pitch had some weird feud thing going on that had been going on for centuries now, so there was no real reason for Pitch to still be here.

Yet there he was, waving that ridiculous scythe around like it was an actual weapon and not the awkward thing it was, flinging sand about when the opening arose. Then again, when the scythe was combined with Sandy's whips and the nightmare with the dream sand, it seemed to be doing some sort of decent damage against the ice the Snow Queen was throwing at them.

They seemed to be doing about the best, along with Cupid and his arrows, Nightlight and the beams of light that came from the crystal topping his spear, as most of their attacks were from a distance. But most of the fighters depended upon close hand-to-hand fighting, and the Snow Queen seemed to have no interest in allowing them that close.

Katherine was crouched against the wall behind a pillar, shooting off spell after spell, unable to do more than that. She was the calming force, the one that could talk everyone around, not the fighter, and was keeping out of the way of the battle. Her spells now were for healing and protection, and not unwanted.

The Snow Queen was having no trouble attacking from a distance, and though she preferred the up close and personal approach when it came to Jack, it seemed she was willing to forgo that if it meant getting a Guardian on her side, and the shards, some so tiny they were only visible as a speck of light, flew about the room as easily as snowflakes.

Tooth cried out, dropping to the ground, her hands going to her eyes, covered by North and Puck as Katherine scrambled out of hiding, sliding across the floor to Tooth. Katherine kissed Tooth's face as Tooth's eyes flashed gold, love and warmth melting the tiny, tiny speck of ice before it could do damage.

 And Jack saw red.

KEEP GOING ON AO3 // KEEP GOING ON FF.NET

lady_phenyx: Drawn image of woman with red hair, large brown eyes and glasses wearing a white button down and pink vest (Default)
I really wanted to get at least a fic for Tales of a Dreambender done for the holidays, or start posting The Starlight Princess, but I don't think it's going to happen. There's so much to get done. I even started some of it back in the summer, and it's going to be down to the wire anyway!

I have gifts to finish, ornaments to make, rooms to clean (our move means there at least one room full of stuff that needs organized and put away) and though I'm working on them every day...there's no way the room one is going to be done in time. :(

I'm sick of living this way, of having all these things piled up. But sometimes it just seems too big to conquer. Like I'm Miles in The Phantom Tollbooth, moving a huge pile of sand one grain at a time.

Still...they're all going to look amazing when they're done. Even if it takes me a few more years to finish the organizing.

I'm trying to clear the writer's block I've got on the TAU fics, and maybe once the pressure to finish ornaments and presents eases up, I can get them done.

(I want to do our small white tree in a pastel candy theme, but no one makes ornaments I like in my price range, so it's painting dollar store ornaments the right colors and making candies for me.)

lady_phenyx: Drawn image of woman with red hair, large brown eyes and glasses wearing a white button down and pink vest (Default)
Still chugging along at the writing. A little stymied on To Have and To Hold - my outline got abandoned about ten chapters ago, and I'm debating how I'm going to wrap up the Snow Queen's part and what happens after. I may write more in the 'verse once I (finally) finish it, but they'd have to be much shorter.

My computer's back to doing a weird thing where all the services for my antivirus don't start/stop themselves during startup and I have to open the antivirus UI and start them. I asked on their support site back when it was first happening and after three, maybe four reinstalls and them looking through some more info I sent them, their solution was basically 'hell if we know. maybe reinstall your OS?' which hell no.

So that's stressful, not knowing what causes it even if I can fix it until the next startup.

I'm debating songs for Princess Mizar. I know if I want to keep it like an actual musical, I can't do so many songs in one section, and there should only be one villain song. But damn do I want to do more than one. Like, three. Also, I've never done a full on songfic, and I think this is going to end up my first. Everyone should do one once, right? Haha.

(Merlin and their family are in a zombie uprising and trapped in a mall with a bunch of werewolves that follow actual wolf behavior. Whoot! Now to decide when Arthur shows up...yay for the first draft being the 'worst version'.)

Got a bunch of Xmas light up - there's a bunch of new ones this year, and they're solar, but the switches are so hard to figure out. No way to tell if they're off or on, and one is so stiff. :-/ But hey, the tree's up, though there's nothing on it and none of the other trees are up.

Finally got the bathroom mirror fixed, at least temporarily. One door kept falling off. Let's hope I got it after all that stretching and bending to get everything taken down and put up!

Back to making presents for me. Maybe this year they'll get done before the eve of. :)

lady_phenyx: Drawn image of woman with red hair, large brown eyes and glasses wearing a white button down and pink vest (Default)
Hello Dreamwidth. A lot's happened since the last time I posted here. It should have, it's been about six years. So...any post you look at beyond this one, keep in mind that it's been a good six years at least, okay? Things have changed, etc.

I'm still working on a move - a real life, physical move. It was done in a very disorganized manner, and all the work of fixing that has fallen to me. I'm making progress, but it's slow.

It feels strange to type up an entry like this - I haven't since I moved from Livejournal to Tumblr.

I'm at a loss at the moment, so I'm just going to list my current projects:

-I'm backing up posts from my Tumblr, as well as trying to save posts from some other blogs I loved, just in case.

-Nanowrimo may be over, but the story isn't. Original manuscript about a genderfluid Merlin and their found family continues.

-To Have and To Hold. I'm still working on the next chapter, and deciding where it's going as a whole. I have an idea, but getting there is taking some time. I never meant to go off the rails with the Snow Queen storyline like I did!

-Christmas Presents. I hand-make them, so I have three different craft projects to finish before Christmas gets here, at the very least. They take up a lot of my free time in the evening.

On the back burner:

-Tales of a Dreambender. I have a few fics in that I DO want to finish, but I haven't had time to work on them.

-The Starlight Princess. Same as above, just haven't had time. I'm a slow writer. :(

I haven't been helped by my laptop having various issues this year. I'm not sure if I fixed them or not - only time will tell.
lady_phenyx: Lucy from I Love Lucy waving a bottle. (I need a drink)
I have nowhere else really to post this, so...going ahead to say this here.

I had a virus on this computer. Now, as far as I & the person helping me can tell, it's been gotten. However, a lot of my space is missing - I think it's from the system restores made before I figured out it was a virus, since none of my scanners picked up anything, even Malwarebytes - but I've never made this many in this short a time before, so it's hard to tell.

I've managed to clear out most of the space I lost, but now I keep waiting for the next shoe to drop. I have this feeling that something else is going to happen, and it won't go away. It's rather miserable. I keep watching everything like a hawk, especially firefox - it would go to 100% CPU usage within five minutes of being opened, which is how we figured out it was a virus - and I get worried each time it does. Thing is, before this all happened, it would sometimes go to 100% and need shut down anyway.

This whole thing has thrown off my plans - I was going to work on putting up decorations and start doing my prompts again, but now I'm scared to. Oh, and my DVD burner isn't working anymore for me to make my backups, so I'm stuck with a flash drive and hope that we get a new computer around here so I can transfer my stuff to it and burn it.

Just needed to get that off my chest, and this seemed the place to do it.
lady_phenyx: Drawn image of woman with red hair, large brown eyes and glasses wearing a white button down and pink vest (Default)
Weelp, knew I'd gone too long without a computer problem. Dad had a bad virus yesterday, so I thought that was gonna be it - but I accidentally updated Firefox. My computer didn't care for it, and I hated how it looked. Shallow, maybe, but...it's important to me. It would have bothered me every time I surfed if it looked that way. So I restore...and it still looks wrong. Go back further, still the same! What should have been a quick fix was getting complex. -_-
In the end, it turned out that somehow, my theme - Firefox 3 for Firefox 4+ - got uninstalled. I have no idea how. But it's back in, and it's all better. But for such a simple fix, it was really aggrivating.

In other news, I'm working hard on my writing. My novel Blessed Chosen is going to be twice as long by the time I'm done, lol. And I have four others to re-write...and Nano is coming up! Hoo boy.

Also, trying to get ready for craft shows. I have...nothing ready. I'm going to be making hats, pop can flowers, and necklaces, plus making a new display - if I can get the hardware. I'm running out of time, in a major way. Not easy - but I'm gonna do my best.
